Born in Warsaw in 1939. Film and theatre director. Studied physics at Warsaw University (1955-59), philosophy at Jagellonian University (1959-62), and directing at State Theatre and Film College in Łódź – graduated 1967. Lectured at many film schools, among others the State Theatre and Film Academy in Łódź, the National Film School in Great Britain, Columbia University (New York), Puna (India), Hamburg University. Author of books: „O montażu w filmie amatorskim" (On Montage in Amateur Films), 1968, „Rozmowy o filmie amatorskim" (A Discourse on Amateur Film), 1978, four volumes of „Scenariusze filmowe" (Film Scripts), „Pora umierać" (Time to Die), 1999, „Między jarmarkiem a salonem" (Between a Bazaar and Salon), 1999. Member of the European Film Academy, Polish Academy of Learning, PEN-Club, Association of Polish Writers.Doctor honoris causa, among others of the Moscow Film Institute (WGIK), the National University of Drama and Cinematography „I.L. Caragiale", European Humanities University, New Bulgarian University, European University in Minsk.
