Film Stuarta Schulberga Norymberga pokazywany był w Niemczech jako część alianckiej kampanii denazyfikacyjnej, ale z powodów politycznych rząd amerykański postanowił nie rozpowszechniać filmu w kinach amerykańskich ani w żadnym innym kraju. Z upływem czasu oryginalne negatywy filmowe i partie ścieżki dźwiękowej zostały zagubione lub zniszczone. Kilka kopii filmu jednak przetrwało. Ponad 60 lat później córka Stuarta, Sandra Schulberg, razem z Joshem Waletzkym skrupulatnie odtworzyła film. Wykonali nowy, 35mm negatyw z najlepszej niemieckiej kopii, zachowując oryginalny film bez zmian montażowych. W rekonstrukcji używają oryginalnych nagrań z procesu, co pozwala publiczności usłyszeć po raz pierwszy głosy oskarżonych i prokuratorów. Film kończy się niepokojącymi słowami: „Niech Norymberga stanie się ostrzeżeniem dla wszystkich, którzy planują lub angażują się w agresywną wojnę”.
Short description: One of the greatest courtroom dramas in history, Nuremberg: Its Lesson for Today shows how the international prosecutors at the first Nuremberg trial (1945-1946) built their case against the top Nazi leaders using the Nazis’ own films and records. The trial established the “Nuremberg principles” — the foundation for all subsequent trials for crimes against the peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
Made by Stuart Schulberg, Nuremberg was widely shown in Germany as part of the Allies’ denazification campaign, but for political reasons the U.S. government decided not to release the film in American theaters or in any other country. Over the years, the original movie negative and sound elements were lost or destroyed, but a few copies survived. More than 60 years later, Stuart’s daughter, Sandra Schulberg, painstakingly restored the film with Josh Waletzky. They made a new 35mm negative from the best German print, preserving the original film with no editing changes. Their restoration uses original audio from the trial, allowing audiences to hear the defendants’ and prosecutors’ voices for the first time. The film ends with these stirring words: ”Let Nuremberg stand as a warning to all who plan and wage aggressive war.”

Stuart Schulberg after writing and directing Nuremberg: Its Lesson for Today, served as chief of the Marshall Plan Motion Picture Section, producing films about the postwar reconstruction of Europe. In 1952, returned to Germany to produce movies No Way Back, Double Destiny, and Embassy Baby. In 1956, he moved his family to the United States in order to produce a movie for Warner Brothers, Wind Across the Everglades, written by his brother Budd Schulberg and directed by Nicholas Ray. He later co-wrote the TV & Broadway adaptations of his brother Budd Schulberg’s novel What Makes Sammy Run?. During the 60s & 70s, he returned to his passion for news & documentary, winning an Emmy Award as co-producer of David Brinkley’s Journal and producing many other TV news specials. He produced NBC’s famous Today program for 7 years, and at his death in 1979 was NBC’s Senior Documentary Producer.

Sandra Schulberg is president of IndieCollect, a non-profit organization that saves, restores and revives significant films. Besides Nuremberg: Its Lesson for Today, her team has recently restored The Atomic Cafe, The War At Home, Thank You and Goodnight, In the Soup. For many years she served as a film financing executive for American Playhouse and Hollywood Partners, based in Paris and Berlin. Her producer credits include the Oscar-nominated Quills; Sundance Grand Prize winner Waiting for the Moon; the feature documentary, Exposed; and many others. In 1978, she founded the IFP, now America’s largest association of independent filmmakers. In 1994, the IFP/West (now Film Independent) honored her contributions to American independent cinema with its Spirit Award. An Adjunct Professor at Columbia University, she teaches Feature Film Financing.
